Tài liệu truyền thông (TLTT) đóng vai trò quan trọng trong truyền tải các thông điệp đến người dân, tuy nhiên, TLTT hiện nay còn nhiều bất cập, nhất là ở khu vực Tây Bắc, trong đó có Sơn La - nơi tỷ lệ người dân biết chữ còn thấp.

Mục tiêu: (1) Đánh giá hiểu biết và thực hành của bà mẹ theo tờ rơi, tranh lật và áp phích hộ gia đình và khả năng sử dụng của ba loại tài liệu này trong truyền thông giáo dục dinh dưỡng ở xã Chiềng Xôm, Mường Chùm và Mường Bú của tỉnh Sơn La, năm 2010. (2) Đánh giá kỹ năng truyền thông giáo dục dinh dưỡng của một số cộng tác viên dinh dưỡng tại các xã nghiên cứu.

Phương pháp: Nghiên cứu cắt ngang mô tả trên 46 bà mẹ đang nuôi con dưới 2 tuổi và 18 cán bộ y tế tại các tuyến tại tỉnh Sơn La.

Kết quả: Hiểu biết và thực hành của bà mẹ khác nhau giữa các nội dung. Khoảng 70-100% bà mẹ hiểu và thực hành NCBSM hoàn toàn trong 6 tháng đầu, nên sinh con tại các cơ sở y tế, cho trẻ ABS từ tháng thứ 7; và dưới 50% bà mẹ hiểu các nội dung về chăm sóc trẻ và chăm sóc trẻ bệnh, cách nấu bột/cháo cho trẻ và tô màu bát bột trong ABS, uống viên sắt và tiêm chủng ở PNMT. Khả năng sử dụng của các TLTT còn nhiều hạn chế do tình trạng thiếu TLTT, hạn chế về kỹ năng của các tuyên truyền viên dinh dưỡng và trình độ học vấn của bà mẹ, các hoạt động hỗ trợ và giám sát truyền thông chưa được chú trọng. Các tuyên truyền viên truyền thông ở mức cung cấp thông tin một chiều cho bà mẹ, chỉ có 1/3 số tuyên truyền viên đạt chuẩn theo tiêu chí đánh giá của Trung tâm Truyền thông giáo dục sức khỏe (Bộ Y tế).  

Education and communication materials (ECs) have an important role in delivering messages to populations. However, current ECs have many shortages, especially in the Northwest area including Son La, where the literacy rate is not so good. A study was conducted with Objectives: (1) To evaluate the understanding and application of the flyer, flipchart and family poster of mothers; and possibility to use these materials in nutrition education and communication in Chieng Xom, Muong Chum and Muong Bu communes in Son La province, (2) To evaluate communication skills of health workers conducting nutrition education and communication in those communes. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 46 mothers who had children under 2 years old and 18 health workers in Son La. Results: Understanding and practice of mothers varied between contents. Approximately 70-100% mothers understood and practiced well on exclusive breast feeding in the first 6 months, giving birth at health facilities, initiation of complementary feeding for children from the seventh months of age; roughly 50% of them understood and practiced well on health care for children and during sickness, on how to prepare complementary foods, and on iron tablet supplementation and vaccination during pregnancy. The utilization of the ECs was limited because of lack of the materials, insufficient skills of the health workers, low education level of mothers and lack of supervision and support for nutrition education and communication in the health care system. Health workers who conducted the nutrition education and communication often provided messages to mothers in a “one-way” manner. Only one out of 3 people met the criteria for effective education and communication.
